I chose The Hate U Give because it addresses the standards while helping students effectively cope with community issues. This will create buy in because the themes in the novel are present in the students daily lives thus creating a deeper level of comprehension and mastery of the state standards to ensure success on End of Course exam.
If I am able to secure these novels, it will allow students to develop a love for reading and hopefully nurture independent reading outside of the classroom setting. This class set of novels will be utilized daily during silent sustained reading and popcorn reading strategies. We will then utilize literature circles to enhance student comprehension.
