At the beginning of this year, I sat down with my kids and asked them what will help them learn. From our conversation I learned that their most disliked aspect of any classroom is the chairs that don't allow them to get comfortable. They said that when they aren't comfortable, they have a harder time focusing on what we are doing. Some students said that having something for their feet to do would help them to focus, while others asked specifically for yoga balls. Some said that they are more comfortable sitting on the floor and using a clipboard to complete their tasks.
By allowing students a choice in their seating, their learning has been put back in their hands. When learning is in the hands of the students, their effort expands ten-fold and their interest is held in the topic rather than focusing on their comfort level.
