My students have many physical and sensory needs, and will benefit from a well-equipped sensory space, where those in wheelchairs can be out of their chairs with several options for stretching movements or supported relaxation. Those who are ambulatory can use the equipment for much needed calming strategies. Much more important for these students than academic content is learning which strategies help to avoid the discomfort, whether physical or sensory which stands in the way of their learning of adaptive, communication and social skills. Many of our students will quickly learn and communicate his/her preferences and will be able to self calm and return to group activities as soon as possible.
