I am an English as a Second Language Teacher in a large urban district. The percentage of students at our school, who are both economically disadvantaged and English Language Learners, is well above the district average.
The primary language spoken in our students homes is not English.
I work with students in grades 1 through grade 3. My students have learned social language skills in English from specialized ESL instruction. The students are now moving towards acquiring academic language skills. These skills will allow them to access grade level curriculum across subject areas and, as a result, have a positive and successful elementary school experience.
