Learning should be fun, interactive and engaging. With this particular lesson I have found that taking the students outside to learn about our schoolyard ecosystem is fun and exciting. This student centered activity allows the students to search for biotic and abiotic factors that are found within the schoolyard ecosystem.
Giving students the opportunity to interact with nature brings to life the concepts of ecology and how living and nonliving components interact with one another will enhance their learning.
The clipboards allows them to take notes, jot down ideas and any questions that may arise from their ecosystem exploration while they are walking around outside. The magnifying lens allows them to get up close and personal with the insects, leaves and other living and nonliving factors.
With the student doing all the work, this is surely an activity they will remember.
