'Play is the work of the child' - Maria Montessori
Students learn about their world through exploration. A great deal of children spend a great deal of time in front of a screen of one type or another. What I can offer them at school is an opportunity to not just look, but to interact with the world around them.
My students can feel the sand run between their fingers, feel the frustration when the dry sand fails to form a castle and elation when the wet sand holds its shape. They can get a sense of conservation when they see that all the water is in the bucket and there is very little left in the table, and then it's just the opposite as the bucket is dumped over, emptied only to be filled again.
My goal is to provide both sand and water play as a choice during our hour-long free center time each day.
