This coming year, will be my first year teaching 5th grade Math. This curriculum includes a lot of Number & Operations/Algebraic Reasoning. These standards require students to solve problems with the aid of calculators that can perform various functions. A calculator promotes higher-order thinking and reasoning needed in a technology-based society. Exposing them to the use of a calculator will help develop students' understanding of arithmetic operations, algorithms and numerical expressions.
Calculators are educational tools that will help develop our students' fluency with numbers. In my classroom, calculators will be used to enhance our students' learning but they will not replace their ways of thinking. The use of the calculators will also help familiarize our students with technology and increase their comfort levels with the use of it. Nowadays, in the workforce, problem solving with the use of technology is also a skill that all employers are actively searching for in employees. The use of calculators will give students an advantage to those who haven't been exposed to them. Calculators will also allow students to get accurate computations when solving problems, making it easier for them to check their own work at the touch of a button. Technology is being introduced in classrooms everywhere and students should learn how to use it appropriately. Exposing them to the use of a calculator will prepare them with the skills they need for junior high, high school and college. This past year Math was our campus' strongest subject and I want our students to live up to the same expectations.
