Sparking the literacy fire in young readers is the cornerstone of a balanced literacy learning environment. Reading quality, engaging books aloud is an effective way to foster engagement and promote comprehension skill and develop a love of literacy learning. The Lighting the Literacy Fire project will provide my kindergarten students with high-quality trade books and big books for whole-class read alouds and shared reading experiences. Throughout the week these carefully chosen books will be read and reread. With each experience, students learn about and apply different strategies to build comprehension and understanding of the text. A typical read aloud involves reading, listening, and thinking about an engaging text; a method known as shared reading is equally important for the youngest of literacy learners. Before, during, and after a shared reading, my students will interact with the text in a big book. Together, we will read and reread the text for several days. Shared reading is an interactive and exciting experience. I have used both of these reading techniques in the classroom with great success. It is so rewarding to observe a student who returns to a familiar text and realizes that they can truly read and understand it. Students will also utilize these books for writing, science, and even social studies references. The books in my classroom library have served hundreds of students and in some cases, these well-loved books have endured the 20+ years of action. My students need texts. I am asking for five new big books and nineteen trade books including Chester, Pigsty, and The Moon Seems to Change. I have selected high-quality fiction and non-fiction books. I know that they will receive years of use and love from the most delightful young minds.
