I began teaching many of my current third graders when they were in first grade. Looping with many of them for the past two years has been a wonderful experience. I have seen them grow as readers, writers and individuals. Teaching in a high poverty area hasn鈥檛 always been easy on our teaching staff. We often scramble for materials, improvise and make do with whatever we can get our hands on. Not wanting the students to suffer, we do all we can to make learning enjoyable, fun and hands on. The one area that we often struggle with is literacy. Supporting our students to become strong, literate individuals, with a deep passion for print is our main goal. We know that strong readers are the key to successful futures, when they transition from 鈥渓earning to read鈥 to 鈥渞eading to learn鈥. Giving them every advantage possible to become strong readers is a must for myself as an educator.
