Being able to program and design equipment and sensors is an ever increasing skill in demand for engineers and scientists. The Arduino allows students to learn to code and create equipment and sensors for labs and project at the same time. The coding software is opensource and there are numerous codes already written and shared on the web. Once the students have the equipment in their hands, the possibilities are endless. They can build and program electronics from robots to smog detectors.
With the Arduino, the possibilities are endless to create new inventions and make discoveries once not possible in the high school classroom. Science and engineering equipment can be quit pricey, but the Arduino is not only affordable, but can take the place of multiple pieces of lab equipment.
This year I have several students who aspire to be engineers in my science classes. They will be working on independent projects throughout the year. I would love to be able to provide them this real world engineer experience. The struggle is, since there are only a handful of students each year that work on these independent studies, it is difficult to get a few hundred dollars allocated toward these projects. Even though my numbers are small, I feel it is really important to provide these opportunities to my students.
