In order for students to be successful in school and beyond, reading is extremely critical, especially in the younger years when our brains develop the most. By offering a variety of books covering both fiction and non-fiction and a broad range of subject matter, I am giving my students a chance to develop a love for reading and also learn about other topics while they do so.
These books will be used in the classroom for students to read to themselves, to a partner, or to a teacher. The non-fiction books align with topics that we will study over the course of the school year so that students can choose to continue their learning on topics that are of special interest to them. The fiction books cover a variety of topics and authors that have been shown to interest students at this level in the past. By creating better readers, I am not only helping them to do well in second grade, but also helping them to become more ready for college, careers, and citizenship.
