Shelving is used to divide the classroom into different learning centers. The use of shelving in an early childhood classroom allows for self-sufficient, independent learning to educate the whole child. Shelving will increase students' ability to focus on specific task with fewer distractions. Help students make choices more easily. Labeling materials and shelves with words and pictures will promote student independence and self regulation. Students will be able to clean up, choose from multiple activities, and can access materials themselves. Shelves will also increase the ability to provide books and writing materials in every center.
