My students are between the ages of 8-10 years old. They come from various backgrounds. Some are from other countries, other states, broken homes. foster homes, live with various family members. However there are some that live in a home with both parents. The school that I work at is a high stakes poverty school. 100% of the students are on free/reduced lunch. Even though statistics are against my students they rise above the stereotype. They may not have been born into wealth and have the materials they need to make learning easier, but they have something that is of greater value. My students have knowledge that will carry them through life.
Nothing breaks my heart more than when my students do not understand a concept that I am trying to explain, and me knowing that if I had the manipulative that went along with the lessons that the connections might be easier to make. I am a brand new teacher who does not have many math and literacy resources built up, yet.
