So many times, students who say they don't like reading just haven't found something that catches their interests. They are slower readers because they are just trudging through books without getting hooked.
In reality, these students just haven't found that special book that they can latch onto and help them fall in love with reading. As I have helped my class grow as readers, I have noticed a lot of interest in three series of books: Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Goosebumps, and the Who is? series. I can't keep them on my shelves, and I am in need of more to not only allow all of my kids the opportunity to read simultaneously, but to also keep their interest in grabbing new books rather than reading the same ones over and over. My main goal is to help my kids realize that reading can be fun if you find that just right book, which will ultimately result in them becoming readers for life!
