I teach in a small school. My students come from a diverse background. Our school is 100% free lunch, meaning the majority of our families can not afford to feed their children, in which case the government provides us with funding to do so. In some some cases, students are the product of generational poverty. It is my job to make up for lack of previous experience and to provide a safe nurturing place to learn and grow.
Students in my school may not have access to the most able bodied or minded parents. Many go home to play video games or watch television. Their home situations have forced tears out of my eyes more than once.
In some cases, school is the one constant in their lives. When they come here, they feel safe. I love my job. I love teaching all of the students in my school as well as being part of the community they come from.
