My 4th grade students love to read - independently, in small groups and most of all, as a class. I love to schedule novel units throughout the year that allow us to read and explore themes, author's purpose, challenging vocabulary and how books affect our lives. Our book discussions are lively, engaging and often spark emotional response as we make connections with the characters and their experiences.
In my 25th year of teaching, I recognize the need for balance in instructional approaches. While meeting the requirements of state and district curriculum, I strive to make learning meaningful and fun for students so that they look forward to school each day and go home with new knowledge or something exciting to share. Novel units are by far one of our favorite ways to spend time together in 4th grade.
