The materials and supplies that I am requesting will provide my first-grade students with real-life hands-on experiences. While there is a huge emphasis on literacy and math in the elementary classroom, science and social studies often get pushed to the side to make room for "more important and pressing needs." The best way to give students the most experience and knowledge possible in a shorter amount of time is through cross-curricular activities. What better way of blending different skills and meeting goals than through cooking.
Cooking meets so many early childhood educational goals while still being a fun and meaningful experience.
Students need so many experiences and exposures to build a background knowledge that meets their intellectual goals. Rich background knowledge has been shown to improve student's overall experience in education and providing a launching point for further investigation. While some students get these experiences in their own homes, there are many students in our Title I-funded school who fall behind academically simply because they lack the background knowledge that other students have been afforded. This project is aimed at bridging the gap of background knowledge by providing my students with meaningful learning opportunities through cooking in the classroom.
