The student population at our school is very transient and a student may be present one day, and the next day that student may be incarcerated. Most of the students within the program do well when they have a chance to learn from each other and have a discussion about the materials and concepts. However, they all come from different backgrounds within the community, and have brought themselves to the same outcomes of being incarcerated in facilities such as detention center or out of home placements. This type of behavior stems from their immaturity and inability to make responsible decisions. That behavior leads to them being unable to adequately control their behaviors and loss of adequately relationship building skills. In turn they turn to gangs as a means of protection and source of belonging. The school that these students attend is a transitional program, which is part of the alternative education program in Wisconsin. The program is used to help them learn the skills needed to be successful.
