All students receive free or reduced lunch. Most will be the first in their families to graduate from a four-year college. My students range in ethnicity with the majority being Hispanic and Black and smaller groups of Pacific Islanders and South East Asians. They are hungry for knowledge and an education that will make their families proud. They want to uplift themselves and their community, but often times they lack the opportunities or are saddled by financial burdens and family crisis that no teenagers should have to go through. Our school culture is at a crucial turning point. Two decades ago, it was a hub of gang violence and race riots, but now it is changing to a place where learning is honored and over 90% of our seniors graduated in the last year.
