During independent reading, our classroom is quiet, students are spread around the room in comfortable spaces, and their eyes are glued to their books. Independent reading time is the one time during the day when students can read at their own level and have a book that they chose. Surprisingly, my students prefer to read non-fiction books and groan when independent reading time is over.
