The IB program at our school challenges students to view the world through multiple lenses. In our IB History of the Americas class, the use of different perspectives is especially important to understand the past.
George Takei's graphic novel, They Called Us Enemy, will help my students tackle an emotionally complex historical moment: Japanese Internment. As a teacher of a diverse classroom, I have many students who have personal attachment to the period of internment during WWII. Takei's heartfelt and earnest story of his youth in relocation camps will help my students understand internment on an individual level and the effects it had internees. The presentation of this story in the form of a graphic novel will further aid some of my struggling readers and paint a picture of civilian life during WWII.
I have successfully applied and received a grant for a majority of these books, but in order to create a class set, I need your help! With your donation, you can bring Japanese Internment to life for my students.
