"Ms. K, I HATE reading, like I passionately HATE it."
These are words I hear on a regular basis, to which I reply, "You just haven't found the right book yet."
Through purchasing current, high interest young adult books, I hope to infuse (or rekindle) a love of reading in my students as well as expose them to language. For many of my students, reading is not a culture they experience at home and when they come to me they are reluctant to indulge.
Last year I challenged each of my 8th grade students to read 30 books, and this year my 8th graders have been issued a similar challenge. It has been amazing to see them rise to the challenge and the growth that has occurred. While not all who were issued the challenge achieved 30 books, they all read more than they ever have before. Captivating books have been a huge resource to help my reluctant readers. I want books in my room because I have observed that students are more willing to pull a book off my shelf and read it than go to the library to find one. Particularly, I am seeking to break down some barriers with some boys who have expressed interest in the books I'm seeking to acquire. Research proves that good readers become good writers. Good readers and writers become good employees.
