I teach a blended language arts and social studies course. My kids and I will be reading and learning about American history from colonization through Reconstruction. We will be reading gripping fiction to help us contextualize American history and sort out historical details. This fundraising project will bring a class set of an AMAZING new novel--Dread Nation to my students (the book is set in Baltimore!) and some other exciting fiction to add to our classroom library.
When kids read exciting fiction, they care more about reading more and more and they care more about the world around them. (Look it up! Reading makes people more empathetic.) I want to bring this kind of engaging, inspiring fiction to my kids!
