Last year, our low-income elementary school implemented a school-wide mindfulness program. Both staff and students felt empowered by learning to control strong emotions and attention. As a school counselor, I would use the materials requested to continue to teach my students the emotional coping mechanisms that can help them conquer the barriers of poverty. Hoberman balls will help teach belly breathing, the singing bowl and rain stick help teach mindful listening, essential oils teach mindful smelling, glitter will create calming jars, and the coloring book will help focus attention. Emotional regulation is a critical skill for my students to achieve.
