My kiddos bring a variety of cultures, language and religious backgrounds into the melting pot that is my classroom. They are from Iran, Lebanon, Nigeria, Mexico, El Salvador and Vietnam to name a few! Many of them speak their native tongue and have committed to participating in a dual language program that aims to develop their English and Spanish skills to the point of being fully fluent in all modalities: speaking, reading and writing. We are a high poverty school in which over 95% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. Many of my children don't have an adult at home who can check their homework or practice their new language with them, some for lack of skills/education and others due to lack of presence; parents who work multiple shifts. They need as much opportunity within the school day to practice their second language in a manner that addresses their learning style as digital natives: technology.
