Being a co-taught classroom, we work with students ranging from advanced ability to below basic ability. We are constantly looking for ways to keep all levels of learners engaged and focused so the concepts we teach stick with them. And with so many gaps in our students' learning due to school closures and distance learning during the pandemic we are looking for the best ways to make learning relevant and exciting for our students to help bridge those gaps.
Being able to take math concepts and turn them into a hands-on learning experience for our students would be a game changer! Using manipulatives like fraction towers so students can visualize and create equivalent fractions, or base ten blocks so they can create groups of numbers to better conceptualize division problems, and even rolling dice to create numbers to practice place value would all allow our students to become more successful in their knowledge of the content material. Not only would we be able to use these manipulatives in our general classroom but they would also be utilized during our remediation and intervention class to help aid those students who have fallen behind to get caught back up.
Another way to help keep our students focused would be the ability to allow them the option of flexible seating. With a high number of our students having attention issues, having a way for them to seemingly control their environment through seating options would help maximize focus and engagement. With these flexible seating options we could better meet the social and emotional learning needs of our students. We specifically chose seating options that will be easy to clean in between student use to help keep the spread of any type of germs limited.
