Swiss biologist and psychologist Jean Piaget recognized the positive effects of hands-on learning when he studied and researched his own theories of cognitive development. Some of his research led to the belief that every interaction establishes cognitive structure in children.
Every experience and interaction has an impact on development in early childhood. This is especially important in the educational classroom environment. Each and every literacy activity my students engage in will play a role in building concrete early literacy skills that will be the foundation for becoming great readers.
These hands-on early literacy activities will continue to enhance the developmentally appropriate early childhood classroom that I strive to create. Our literacy workstations are made up of hands-on activities that build letter identification, phonemic awareness, concept of print, and word building. Workstation time is a time that my students really enjoy hands-on learning and peer interaction. Every learning activity that is placed in our workstations is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to learn through fun hands-on activities.
My students need Giant Alphabet Beads, Magnetic Fishing Poles, Word Building Puzzles and other hands-on learning activities. All of these materials have been chosen with my students in mind. I have watched them since the first few weeks of school and feel like these activities will not only be enjoyable but will also help meet the academic needs of my students. Students will be able to choose a variety of literacy based learning activities, which will help them continue to enjoy learning.
