Our school is in an urban area. The school district faces challenges every year with budgets and staff enforced cuts. However, the people affected most by these challenges are the students! Every year students face a variety of academic challenges outside the hardships they already face at home. The biggest challenge is the lack of resources the school provides. Many of the basic school supplies students need everyday are provided by the teachers. My students are special education students and they need more materials and resources because they learn through experiences rather than flipping through a text book (talk about boring). Which is why I want to talk about text! Just this past year, I have tried new activities with the students such as reading/writing projects, incorporating the arts and mailing letters to Japan as an interactive project. The students loved every minute of it and their levels improved. They are eager to learn and they deserve quality resources and tools.
