As a kindergarten teacher, one of my favorite parts of our day is read aloud. My students love to hear our read-aloud books come alive in front of them. They giggle during silly parts and feel sad when characters feel sad. They get so much enjoyment out of this time, but they also are building important foundational reading skills. They are developing their vocabulary, listening comprehension, and being exposed to fluent expressive reading.
With so much importance put on reading aloud, it is crucial that students see themselves represented in the books they read. For many of my students, this is not the case. Many of our read-aloud-appropriate books feature characters that do not represent the diverse backgrounds my students come from. These books will not only help my students develop important foundational skills, but also provide them with realistic representations of themselves.
