My name is Mrs. Cathleen Garry- Durand, I am a Music Specialist position in a STEM Academy at the Rogers School in Lowell, MA. (we focus on Science, Tech., Engineering and Math.) It is a public school that has recently opened, and as such has very little in the way of musical instruments and other supplies. It is located in an urban city north of Boston. Over 80% of the kids receiving free lunch. The population is made up of students from many cultures who are excited about learning in an environment that challenges them creatively. In Music class, we will be singing, dancing, playing instruments, etc. Since there are many diverse learners in the school including many newcomers and students with special needs, I will need to adapt my instruction to help these students with lots of hands on activities including playing rhythm instruments. Music education can help disadvantaged students bridge the achievement gap!
