Reading is obviously not for White People.
However, reading Lisa Delpit's "MULTIPLICATION IS FOR WHITE PEOPLE" RAISING EXPECTATIONS FOR OTHER PEOPLES CHILDREN opened my eyes to providing culturally and academically relevant books for my students to read in the classroom.
I am a whit, 8th grade, reading teacher at a school in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Seventy five percent of the student population is Black, and 25 percent are minority. The school is beginning its fourth year of service. It is a Title 1 school which means that over 75% of students qualify for free or reduced priced lunch. Most students have a challenging home life, and therefore have consistently had trouble with school. The administration at my school is loving and supportive of students and staff. Children and staff are listened to and heard. The school's motto is, "Where Every Child Has a Seat at the Table". Once you get to know the students, they are friendly, loving, and have a desire to learn just as their white peers do.
