My school is a Title One school with more than 90% of the students on free or reduced lunch. I teach a 4th grade classroom in a small portable that does not provide enough space for an extensive class library, storage for classroom supplies, desk for all of the students, and room on the carpet for the students to sit comfortably on the floor. The reading and writing programs that I teach have greatly benefited the students. There were not only significant gains but I also saw students that struggled with social skills were able to communicate and work effectively with other students. The students practice these skills on the floor during a read aloud when they discuss the book being read.
