Reading is the cornerstone of all academic learning. Although we have class time dedicated to group reading and silent sustained reading, not all students read at the same pace or on the same level. Allowing a student to take a book home to complete a reading assignment would meet the needs of many students on different reading levels. We currently do not have enough classic literature in the classroom to allow for each student to check out a book from the class set to take home.
This project will provide a set of books for students to use in class, and to take home for selected reading assignments. This will open up more time in class for group discussion focused on comprehension, critical thinking, personal connection and finding deeper meaning within the text. The result will be a fuller, richer experience of the literature, which ultimately will result in better understanding.
