"Courage. Kindness. Friendship. Character. These are the qualities that define us as human beings, and propel us, on occasion, to greatness." R.J. Palacio. This quote was my mantra this year that I tried to instill into all of my students. Teaching in a low economic area my students are not only faced with academic hardships but socioeconomic hardships as well. They are constantly pressured by outside factors giving them the idea that education and learning is not "cool". They are influenced by the latest rappers or artists that they forget that they are still young children that can create their own identity rather than trying to be someone else. This year I moved away from the curriculum and got each student the book "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio. This book has an extraordinary message, Be Kind. Literature=Knowledge=Success
