When you visualize a school in Alaska, do you imagine a school district with over 90 languages spoken? Do you visualize Samoan, Somali, Sudanese, Athabaskan, Dominican, Bhutanese, and Philipino students in the same class? Those are just some of the many cultures that come together in my classroom. We are a high poverty school with an extremely diverse cultural population learning to coexist.
Most of the students in my class did not attend preschool or daycare, so Kindergarten is the first time they have had the opportunity to be in a large social group outside their home. Focus on social skills and character education is an vital facet of Kindergarten.
