Our School is a high need Title 1 school in the heart of Appalachia. Most students qualify for free and reduced lunch which means that they come from economically disadvantaged homes that may not have the academic support we typically depend on. Many students also deal with challenging home life situations and depend on school for "normalcy" and emotional support.
My students come to school everyday eager to learn. They range from Kindergarten through sixth grade and all students struggle in reading and/or math. Each student requires an intervention plan that includes one on one time with the teacher, peer tutoring and targeted small group instruction to close the achievement gap. Our days are hectic but fulfilling and each student works hard to achieve his or her academic goals.
