Imagine moving to a new country. You have has little to no formal education before. You have left you home, culture, language, and customs. The only items you may have are the ones you carry and you had no time to prepare. You have little to no English and may not read or written in any language. You come to a new country and need to adjust quickly. These are the students I teach every day.
I work in a school that is 100% English language learners, refugees, and immigrants. Many of my students have had very limited schooling in their native language and are now thrust into a formal school setting. We move from learning letters to reading very quickly. My students have come from all around the world. They hold the American Dream, but need the tools to make them successful.
