I work in a high poverty Title I elementary school, which is also a magnet school for the arts. My students are passionate about performing, experiencing and doing. They are busy and curious and need lots of activity to keep them engaged in the academic work at hand.
Many of my students struggle to conceptually understand the math they are "doing" in traditional textbooks. This struggle makes it difficult for them to apply the math in new and different contexts. Many of them still struggle with basic facts, which impedes their mathematical success. In turn, it is difficult for them to feel successful with grade level expectations.
