I teach first grade inclusion in a high poverty urban district with students from diverse backgrounds. Nearly 90% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Regardless of these circumstances, my students are eager to learn, but other factors make learning difficult for some of them.
In my first grade inclusion classroom of 20 students, half of the children have special needs and are on IEPs for various health related and learning disabilities, while the other half are peer role models. The learning disabilities range from autism, ADHD, health issues, fine motor and speech/communication delays, as well as developmental delays in reading, writing, and math. Several students are also English Language Learners.
