I am a math teacher and robotics coach in a rural agricultural community on the Big Island of Hawaii. I have a passion for presenting mathematics in a way that connects culture to learning, as well as exposing students to STEM principals through robotics. My school is 100% free lunch and free busing since so many of my students live at or below the poverty line. My goal is to teach math and robotics in such a way that it inspires students to experiment and explore STEM, making mistakes along the way and learning from those challenges. Through an open exploration of STEM the students think about math differently and it is no longer numbers in a page of a book but a language used throughout the world. Through robotics they learn the process of engineering organically from the roots of circuitry to the art of programming, preparing them for careers that are still being developed or are yet to come.
