I envision using what I learn in district-wide workshops for staff and students to benefit the entire community. Our district as a whole consists of nearly 10,000 students, all from similar disadvantaged backgrounds. I want to host either a before or after school yoga class regularly for students and staff. I will eventually teach a yoga/mindfulness workshop during study hall that students may attend. In order to do this, I must complete this training to be certified.
There is abundant evidence that mindfulness techniques reduce the school-to-prison pipeline for lower-income minority students, improves grades, increases graduation rates, reduces negative outcomes of stress, and helps English language learners (ELLs) develop their academic language skills. Through this professional development, I will learn specific techniques to help my students with their mental health and become a certified yoga instructor with an additional emphasis on social emotional learning (SEL). I will use what I learn on a regular basis in the classroom to help my students manage stress and strengthen their coping mechanisms.
In addition to promoting a general well-being in this community, there are many positive long-term implications for students who are historically neglected by society. This is an opportunity to achieve more equitable educational outcomes for the community.
