Fitness is for everyone, many times Physical Education is an underestimated tool for educational success. Studies show that children involved in physical activity are more successful in the classroom. I want to integrate STEM (science, technology and Math) content into a new fitness room for my students by using heart rate monitors and pedometers to mathematically track their steps. While participating in fitness activities students will monitor their heart rate as well as distance traveled over a set period of time. This will teach students how to maintain health throughout a lifetime. I want students to see their level of activity and for them to track personal growth.
They can track personal growth and become advocates for their personal health through STEM (science, technology and math) content. In the classroom the fitness concept cardiovascular endurance will be introduced through exercises and activity. After the activity students will take the data from the heart rate monitors and pedometers and chart (graph) their level of pre and post data. They will be able to see their growth and understand how different types of exercises such as weight training and cardiovascular endurance exercise can positively impact health as well as academics.
I would love to have the equipment for our students to utilize. Physical Education is so much more than sports and games. Physical Education can help a student create a positive lifestyle that can serve them throughout a lifetime.
