I teach at a community school located in East Harlem, Manhattan, NY. Many of my students come from mixed backgrounds and do not have the opportunities that students in other areas are exposed to. My students are being raised by single parents, grandparents, or extended family members. Many of students come from homes where they only speak Spanish and do have access to appropriate materials in English or Spanish! Many of them do not have access to the Internet or technology outside of the classroom. They always make requests for new games or engage in a different activity-that can be hard when I do not have access to print materials for therapy activities or homework to send home.
My school does a great job supporting our students and try their best to raise money, but often the specials get left out since we are not considered part of the classroom.
