Imagine you're a student of color and your class' library is full of book featuring white characters. Imagine your family has just moved to America, but all the books on your class' library are set in America and are about traditional American culture. Would you choose to read these books? Would you make connections with the characters or authors? My school population is very diverse and my students desire a bookshelf full of books about characters that look like them and families that interact like theirs. I am asking for a variety of
books that will bring inclusivity to my classroom book shelf. These books feature characters, authors, and traditions from many different cultures and ethnic backgrounds. By featuring these books in my classroom library, I will allow my students to see themselves in the books I offer and help continue to build strong readers.
