I teach eighth grade English at Spring Creek Community School in Brooklyn, New York. My school is a very high needs school with 100% student population receiving free lunch and free metrocards. Engagement is tough for some of my students and a very relatable unit will help them connect with other people's experiences and will help them engage in social justice issues. Eventually, their interest in reading and literacy will help promote a need to reflect and change the environment and community they come from. My students love talking about issues related to injustice and love talking about issues that promote positive change.
