We are a Montessori program in a public school in Louisiana. My students are ages 3-6, and come from all socio-economic backgrounds. My students feel safe at school and are very happy to be at work in their classroom. Our school is a vibrant blend of different programs, for meeting different children's needs. The different programs intertwine well, and the school staff works together like a family. I am concerned about the prevalence of violence and disharmony in our society. Children see it everyday in local news stories, they overhear it through family discussions, and they visually experience it through televison and electronic devices. I want to offer them alternative ways to respond to anger through literature which shows them good role models, and provides them with the vocabulary of peaceful living. I also want to offer them a variety of self-calming activities for classroom use and personal use.
