My special education students attend a wonderful school in metropolitan Oklahoma. Many of the students that I serve have disabilities that make gaining academic and practical skills difficult. Daily practice is essential if they are going to become better readers and citizens-yet it is not a very appealing prospect for most. Many of them read at levels 1-2 grades below their peers, but because they lack both skills and confidence they do not practice. My students are eager to learn and anxious to succeed-but life has not yet handed them the tools to make this possible. They dream of becoming doctors and teachers, but this dream will be impossible unless they overcome this key challenge-becoming competent, engaged readers.
