My students are a fun-loving group despite the hardships they face on a daily basis. For most of my students, our classroom is their safe haven. It's a place that provides them with shelter, food, and water. It's a place for them to make friends and build community. It's a place they can call home. They come to school everyday with smiles on their faces, ready to learn. Though, as time goes on, I see them lose focus and become disinterested in learning, especially reading. When asked why, their response is "the books we have are old and boring".
Our school is located in the heart of the Iron Triangle. We primarily service African American and Latino students. Most of our families are poverty stricken. Likewise, our school lacks fundamental resources needed to provide our students with an equitable education. Even pencils and paper are hard to come by leaving it up to the teacher to fund the classroom.
