Students like to play and typically don't like to work. I have to create an environment of work that looks like play to the children. My students have difficulty with fine motor and perceptual motor skills, which blocks them from learning. Without these skills, they are unable to write and complete their work. Not only do many of them not have these skills, they also do not have the strength in their intrinsic muscles to perform activities requested of them. This makes it difficult to manipulate small items and writing utensils. In addition to difficulty with school work, it also translates into difficulty with activities of daily living. Without the above skills, they will also have difficulty with buttoning their jackets when it's cold outside for recess.
