My students are those that need books put into their hands; books that tell a story of someone like them, of someone who is struggling, but realizing they can make life what they want and not simply accept what has or hasn't been given to them.
As a Language Arts teacher, I spend an enormous amount of time cultivating a culture of reading in my own classroom; modeling what fluent reading sounds like, how strong readers ask questions of the text, and how you can find a repeating set of themes from real life in fictional texts. My students need this example, but they also need access to quality books with a wide variety of options as the high-percentage of my students qualifying for free or reduced lunch.
